Medi-Spa at Mercy: Acupuncture
What is Traditional Acupuncture?
Traditional Acupuncture is the oldest continuously practiced medicine in the world. Acupuncture assists in restoring the natural flow and balance of life energy (Qi) to promote health and well-being.
Traditional acupuncture acknowledges that the body, mind, and spirit are connected and that all aspects of a person affect his or her sense of wellness. It recognizes that every person contains within himself or herself the natural ability and wisdom to heal and be well.
Traditional Acupuncture seeks to identify underlying imbalances that may give rise to physical symptoms and disease. Throughout treatment, patients empower themselves in regaining health.
How does Acupuncture work?
Traditional Chinese medicine teaches that there is a life force (Qi) which created the body and continues to keep it alive. When this life force is weakened, the resulting imbalance in the energy pathways of the body (the meridians) may appear as disease. Ancient masters traced these pathways and located points where the energy can be contacted at the surface of the body. It is these points that are stimulated during an acupuncture treatment.
Modern acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible, about the diameter of a thick hair. They are pre-sterilized, disposable, and are used to attract or disperse Qi energy along the meridian pathways.
Most insertions are just beneath the surface of the skin. Sometimes the patient feels nothing at all or perhaps a dull, momentary ache or tingling. Often only two or three needles are used per treatment.
What should I expect from treatment?
The first few treatments are usually one week apart. The positive effects of treatments build upon each other, supporting the changes that have begun. Gradually, the length of time between treatments will increase, until eventually treatments will become seasonal. Acupuncture calls on the body’s own inner strength for healing. Therefore, changes tend to be subtle, deep and gradual.
A patient’s response to acupuncture will vary. Some patients may experience great relief after one treatment. Others, with more serious or deep-rooted conditions, will require longer and more intensive treatment.
What might Acupuncture help?
Traditionally, acupuncture has been used preventively to correct imbalances before they become serious and result in pain and disease.
Traditional acupuncture is often effective in treating a wide range of complaints including: headaches, allergies, fatigue, depression, back pain, menstrual disorders, weight loss, side effects of chemotherapy, pre- and post-natal care, depression, sleeping problems, asthma, addictions, and stress. Acupuncture is also for those who wish to enrich their lives and maintain optimum health.
