Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: Other Reconstructions

One of the great advantages of care at Mercy Medical Center and The Weinberg Center for Women’s Health & Medicine is a team approach to complex problems.  Frequently seen in breast cancer treatment, the multi-disciplinary approach helps improve outcomes and in many cases improves healing and recovery.

The physicians of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Mercy have the skill necessary to perform a wide variety of reconstructive procedures.

For more information on treatment options for the procedures below, please call Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Mercy at 410-332-9700.

Cancer Reconstruction

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery frequently works with The Institute for Cancer Care to reconstruct complex wounds occasionally encountered in the treatment of cancer.

Chest Wall Reconstruction

The chest wall is the skeletal structure that underlies our muscles, skin and in women (and some men) breast tissue.  While chest wall deformities are rare, there are options for reconstruction.  These include grafting bone, moving muscle or placing an implant to correct a collapsed chest wall (pectus excavatum).  Often these procedures are performed in conjunction with breast implants (augmentation), breast reduction, and mastectomy for gynecomastia (male breast tissue removal).

General Surgery and Plastic Surgery

Obesity and weight loss often result in laxity of the muscles or fascia of the abdomen.  Working with Mercy’s General Surgeons who repair hernias (open and laparoscopic); Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is able to improve the result and healing by doing a panniculectomy or even an abdominoplasty.

Gynecologic and Gynecologic Oncology Reconstruction

Many times, The Gynecology Center physicians work with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to improve wound healing, reconstruct the pelvic floor, perform vaginal reconstruction and occasionally remove extra skin common in older women and those who have had children or lost weight.

Latissimus Dorsi Flap

This procedure is done in conjunction with an implant using the Latissimus Dorsi muscle of the upper back, skin, and fat tissues, which camouflage the implant. Your surgeon will discuss the procedure in detail if this is the best option for your reconstruction.

Lower Extremity Wound Problems

Utilizing their extensive experience in microvascular reconstruction, the Mercy plastic and reconstructive surgeons work with the world-renowned surgeons of The Institute for Foot & Ankle Reconstruction to get the best outcomes in complex deformities and wounds of the lower extremities.

Scar Revisions

All surgery leaves some scarring.  Whether small from laparoscopic or endoscopic procedures to large incisions for complex reconstruction, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is frequently called upon to close the wound, thin the thick scar and improve the appearance.

Skin Cancer

Excision and reconstruction of skin tumors can involve several procedures and in complex cases, other surgeons and physicians. The lesion must first be biopsied to determine malignancy. This is often done in the office or in many cases by a patient’s dermatologist.  Once a diagnosis is obtained, the lesion is excised.  This is done in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Procedure Room in our suite (small lesions) or the Mercy Surgery Suite.  Reconstructive options include primary closure (a straight approximation of the incision), a skin graft (that matches the skin color of the face) or a flap (local tissue of the same type or distant tissue using a microscope if it is a large area).  In rare cases, other treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy are needed.
