Bernard W. Chang, M.D.

Director, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

Assistant Director, The Hoffberger Breast Center

Bernard W. Chang, M.D. is director of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Mercy works closely with the physicians of The Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy offering women choices they may not find elsewhere.

Dr. Chang has extensive experience performing the deep interior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap procedure for breast reconstruction. With the DIEP flap, the surgeon can restore the woman’s breast using her own fatty tissue while simultaneously giving her a flatter abdomen.

Dr. Chang is one of several surgeons in the country to perform the S-Gap, superior gluteral artery perforator flap procedure. Unlike other flap procedures, the S-Gap utilizes the patient’s tissue taken from the gluteal (upper buttock) region rather than the abdominal area for breast reconstruction. The S-Gap provides a viable alternative for breast reconstruction patients for whom taking abdominal tissue (due to previous scarring or thinness of tissue) is not an option.

Dr. Chang’s research projects have included an isometric and dynamic assessment of abdominal wall function following TRAM flap reconstruction. He has made numerous presentations concerning post mastectomy reconstruction, breast reconstruction after cancer and obesity as a risk factor in breast reconstruction.

Dr. Chang was recognized in Baltimore Magazine and in Good Housekeeping Magazine as one of Maryland’s “Top Plastic Surgeons.” Before coming to Mercy in July of 1999, Dr. Chang was director of the Center for Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery of the Breast at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Board Certified in Plastic Surgery, Dr. Chang has more than 20 years of medical experience, graduating from the University of California at Los Angeles Medical School in 1984. Dr. Chang is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Chang was an associate professor of Plastic Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and assistant clinical professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
