Gynecologic Oncology Center: Uterine Cancer
There are two types of uterine cancer, endometrial
and sarcoma of the uterus. Endometrial cancer is the most
commonly occurring
gynecologic cancer. However, there currently is no effective
and specific screening test. The most common first sign
of endometrial
cancer is abnormal uterine bleeding sometimes
accompanied by pelvic pain or pressure.
Sarcoma of the uterus is a very rare cancer in women, in which,
cancer cells grow in the muscles or supporting tissues of the
uterus. Postmenopausal women who experience any type of bleeding
should see their physician promptly, since uterine cancer occurs
most commonly in this group of women.

Endometrial Cancer
Diagnosis for endometrial cancer may include:
- Endometrial biopsy during a pelvic exam
- Dilation and curettage (D&C), in which the uterus is scraped
or tissue is snipped out of the uterus while the patient
is under anesthesia.
- Hysteroscopy
If cancerous cells are detected, removing the uterus is the most effective
treatment. The ovaries, fallopian tubes and lymph nodes in the
surrounding area may also be removed. Post-surgical treatment
may include chemotherapy and/or radiation.
Drs. Rosenshein, Im and Ryu have extensive experience in the diagnosis
and treatment of uterine cancer and are dedicated to individualized,
compassionate care for their patients.
