Gynecologic Oncology Center: Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is one of the most complex gynecologic cancers
to diagnose and treat. The symptoms of the disease are not specific
and can be the same or similar to many other common ailments.
If any of the following symptoms are unusual for your medical
history or last longer than would be considered "normal", seek
expert medical attention:
- Abdominal bloating
- Abdominal pressure
- Unintentional weight changes, especially weight gain
- Pelvic pain or pain during intercourse
- Urinary frequency without an infection
- Nausea, indigestion, constipation or diarrhea
Currently there are no simple screening tests to detect ovarian cancer, which
is why it is so important for women to receive an annual pelvic
exam in which a qualified physician checks for any abnormalities.
If ovarian cancer is suspected after a pelvic exam or transvaginal
ultrasound, the final determination of ovarian cancer must be
confirmed by surgical exploration and biopsy.
After diagnosis, removal of as much of the tumor as is safe
and possible will be completed and may involve the removal of
one or both ovaries, the fallopian tubes and/or the uterus.
Chemotherapy is usually recommended following surgery, except
in cases where the cancer is in the earliest stages.
Drs. Rosenshein, Im and Ryu have a thorough understanding of the
patterns of metastasis (spread) of ovarian cancer and are widely
recognized experts in its specialized treatment. The physicians
are available for consultations.
