Gynecologic Oncology Center: Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is treatable and, in many cases, curable when
diagnosed in the early stages. The Pap test is the most effective
screening method for cervical cancer and should be conducted
annually. The Pap test involves scraping some cells from the
cervix and evaluating them for abnormalities. The Pap test does
not confirm the presence of cervical cancer, rather it confirms
the presence of cervical dysplasia, a condition that can be
a precursor to cervical cancer.
In the early stages of cervical cancer, there are no visible
symptoms. In the advanced stages of cervical cancer common symptoms
include irregular vaginal bleeding, pain in pelvic area, legs
and back, discomfort while urinating, and blood in the urine.
Additional diagnostic tests may be recommended which will include
a biopsy and a pelvic examination to determine whether there
are any serious abnormalities in the pelvic region.
Treatment of cervical cancer is dependant upon the tumor size,
invasiveness and location. If the cancer has spread to regions
beyond the pelvic organs, radiation therapy, including brachytherapy,
and/or chemotherapy may be recommended.
Brachytherapy is defined as the use of radioactive materials
in the treatment of cancer by placing radioactive sources in
direct contact with the tissues to be treated.
Physician expertise, knowledge and skill are critical when
surgical treatments are recommended. Drs. Rosenshein, Im and Ryu bring years of teaching and clinical experience to the treatment
of even the most advanced cervical cancer cases.
