Gynecology Center: Interstitial Cystitis
Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic pelvic pain disorder.
It is a condition resulting in recurring discomfort or pain
in the bladder and the surrounding pelvic region. Research is
on-going to determine the cause and origin of interstitial cystitis.
It is believed to be significantly underdiagnosed, particularly
in its less severe form. It is estimated that more than a million
women suffer with this condition. The symptoms of interstitial
cystitis include:
- Urinary urgency
- Frequency
- Severe bladder pain with no infection
Interstitial cystitis typically has a gradual onset with an irregular progression.
It is often misdiagnosed as a bladder infection or perhaps urethral
syndrome, in its earliest stages. Left untreated, damage to
the bladder will continue to progress and the symptoms and your
quality of life will worsen.
Interstitial Cystitis Symptom Questionnaire:
- During the past month, how often have you felt the strong
need to urinate with little or no warning?
- During the past month, have you had to urinate less than
2 hours after you finished urinating?
- During the past month, how often did you most typically
get up at night to urinate?
- During the past month, have experienced pain or burning
in your bladder?
