The Center for Advanced Breast Restoration at Mercy

The Center for Advanced Breast Restoration at Mercy is a premiere center for women seeking breast reconstruction after breast cancer, breast restoration surgery, and breast revisions. The Center for Advanced Breast Restoration is led by the nation’s pioneering leader in breast reconstruction, Bernard W. Chang, M.D., Director of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Mercy, and includes Brendan J. Collins, M.D., Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Together, Drs. Chang and Collins have over 20 years experience in breast reconstruction, breast restoration and breast revision surgeries. They lead the area in performing DIEP and SGAP perforated flap surgeries for breast reconstruction and are sought out by surgical fellows from across the nation to train in the renowned fellowship program at Mercy.

Multidisciplinary Care

Bernard Chang, M.D., and Brendan Collins, M.D., of The Center for Advanced Breast Restoration are focused on providing individualized care to every patient. Drs. Chang and Collins work closely with Neil B. Friedman, M.D., and Gauri Bedi, M.D., of The Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy, and a full multidisciplinary team of physician assistants, educators, lymphedema specialists, physical and occupational therapists. Physician consultations, surgeries, and office visits are coordinated to help patients move from breast cancer surgery to breast reconstruction easily.

Individualized Treatment in a Restful Environment

Surgeons Bernard Chang, M.D., and Brendan Collins, M.D., offer patients cutting-edge treatment to achieve the most natural results in breast reconstruction, breast restoration and breast revisions. Whether patients want to have their reconstructive surgery immediately after the removal of a cancerous breast, or a delayed breast reconstruction which is performed separately from breast cancer surgery, patients can choose the option best for them.

Patients recover from breast reconstruction in Mercy’s new main hospital, The Mary Catherine Bunting Center, which offers large, all-private patient rooms, Wi-Fi connections, flat screen TVs, rooftop gardens, and expansive window views in every room to promote healing and recovery in a restful environment.

Breast Reconstruction and Restoration Options

Drs. Chang and Collins specialize in the following breast reconstruction and breast restoration techniques.

Breast Reconstruction

Autologous Breast Reconstruction – Autologous breast reconstruction uses a patient’s own tissue which is taken from another part of her body, like the abdomen or buttocks, to create a new breast for a natural and graceful appearance. Living tissue ensures a softer and more natural look to the breast. Types of autologous breast reconstruction procedures:

  • DIEP Flap (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) – Breast reconstruction using skin and fat from the lower abdomen to create and contour a breast mound.
  • Stacked DIEP Flap – Breast reconstruction using more abdominal fatty tissue than a typical DIEP flap procedure which allows some women the opportunity for this type of surgery that would not be candidates otherwise.
  • Latissimus Flap– Breast reconstruction using muscle and skin from the upper back to create and contour a breast mound.

Breast Revisions

  • Nipple Tattoo – A tattooing procedure using permanent ink recreates the areola of the breast.
