Sheri Rowen, M.D., F.A.C.S.FIELD: Ophthalmologic Surgery, Eye Surgery Ophthalmologic surgeon Dr. Sheri Rowen, M.D., director of the Eye & Cosmetic Surgery Center at Mercy, has established a world-wide reputation by being the first in the Baltimore region (and one of the first nationally) to remove cataracts without the use of injection anesthesia. Using micro incisions and foldable lens technology, she is able to achieve "instant vision" cataract surgery, without needles, stitches or patches. Dr. Rowen has been one of 10 investigators in a national study for the use of an implantable contact lens for correcting myopia and hyperopia. She also offers photo refractive keratotomy, and LASIK eye surgery. Dr. Rowen offers a variety of cosmetic procedures performed in office and OR venues, including: botox facial injections; Obagi skin care treatment; Obagi blue peel; HGM laser for spider veins and facial freckles and discolorations; upper and lower lid blepharoplasty (for "bags around the eyes"); lower eye lid or full face resurfacing using the CO2 or Erbium laser; Ptosis upper lid repair (relaxed eye muscles causing partial lid closure); and Xanthelasma (plaque that forms around the eye) removal. She has lectured internationally, teaching advanced techniques in cataract and laser surgery to physicians worldwide. She completed a one-year surgical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was a research fellow for two years at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Rowen serves as an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is a clinical instructor for Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology; and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. MISCELLANEOUS: According to Dr. Charles Williamson of the Williamson Eye Clinic in Baton Rouge, LA, "Sheri is well-known as an extremely capable and excellent surgeon. It's unusual to see a woman receive such high stature in a field that's still dominated by men." (The Daily Record, March 1-7, 1997.) Dr. Rowen has made professional presentations on clear corneal incisions using topical anesthesia. She continues to target advances in the correction of astigmatism in conjunction with cataract surgery; new forms of glaucoma treatment; the ability to correct both near and farsightedness with contact lens implants. Her achievements were instrumental in her selection as the only U.S. representative to participate in a 1997 international conference of eye surgeons held at the University of Bologna, Italy. Dr. Rowen performed live surgery on numerous patients, all with various forms of cataract ailments.
