Mark S. Myerson, M.D.FIELD: Foot and Ankle Surgery POSITION/TITLE: Director, The Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at Mercy BACKGROUND: An internationally recognized leader in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, he is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Myerson earned his medical degree at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, Medical School and received his orthopedic residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical System. He completed his fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. Dr. Myerson is one of the world’s leading authorities in the field of total ankle replacement and ankle transplant surgery. Using live bone and cartilage from a donor, Dr. Myerson can transplant the healthy tissue to the patient; the new cells then nourish the patient’s existing cartilage. Total ankle replacement surgery offers patients an option beyond ankle joint fusion which typically compromises the ability to walk and can lead to arthritis. Dr. Myerson has authored more than 200 research publications as well as four text books covering various treatments of foot and ankle conditions. He has developed numerous breakthrough procedures for treating various foot and ankle injuries and deformities. Dr. Myerson is an invited guest speaker, giving professional talks worldwide as consultant and educator. He has trained hundreds of orthopedic surgeons both in the United States and abroad. Dr. Myerson employs state-of-the-art technology in his work, including a voice-activated computer system in the operating room which allows him to call up necessary information, such as MRIs and X-rays, during surgery.
