Rohit Ross Lakhanpal, M.D.FIELD: Vitreoretinal Disease POSITION/TITLE: Doctor of Vitreoretinal Disease, Center for Eye and Cosmetic Surgery Center at Mercy BACKGROUND: After graduating with honors from Franklin & Marshall College, Dr. Rohit Ross Lakhanpal received his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center; at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Lakhanpal was appointed Chief Resident. Dr. Lakhanpal undertook a two-year research and medical retina fellowship at the Doheny Retina Institute under the guidance of Mark S. Humayun, MD, PhD and Eugene de Juan, MD. There, he wrote several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on the Intraocular Retinal Prosthesis (Artificial Vision). He also wrote several early landmark papers concerning 25-gauge vitrectomy which is now the standard of care in Vitreoretinal Surgery. Dr. Lakhanpal was honored with the prestigious Fletcher Jones Foundation Grant for his work and was one of the founders and the Principal Investigator of the Doheny Digital Reading Center’s Diabetic Screening Studies. Following his tenure at Doheny, Dr. Lakhanpal completed a two-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He served as the Chief of the Retina Service for the Ben Taub General Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Hospital, and Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Lakhanpal was honored with the Outstanding Fellow Award among his peers. He has published over 75 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. MISCELLANEOUS: Dr. Lakhanpal is a co-founder and current Vice-President of the Vit-Buckle Society (VBS), a national vitreoretinal society focused on surgical innovation and technique while fostering an atmosphere of discussion and camaraderie. In 2009, Dr. Lakhanpal was appointed Section Editor of Retina Today, a monthly peer-reviewed periodical highlighting innovations in medical and surgical vitreoretinal techniques. He was also appointed Section Editor of Eyetube.net, a global resource for ophthalmologists to view and discuss surgical challenges and techniques. During his first year of eligibility, Dr. Lakhanpal was honored by his peers and elected to the prestigious Retina Society. He is an active member of the Wilmer Residents Association, Doheny Alumni Association, Baylor Alumni Association, American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), Association of Research and Vision in Ophthalmology (ARVO), Vit-Buckle Society (current Vice-President), and Retina Society.
