Vadim Gushchin, M.D.

FIELD: Surgical Oncology, Cancer Surgery

POSITION/TITLE: Surgical Oncologist, The Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy

BACKGROUND: Prior to joining Mercy, Dr. Gushchin was at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, where he completed his Fellowship in Surgical Oncology. He received his medical degree from the Russian State Medical University in Moscow in 1993 and underwent his surgery residency at Moscow Hospital, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Gushchin has served as an Associate Staff physician in the Department of Surgery at the University of Buffalo, and as Research Instructor in Surgery with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine in Bethesda, MD.

Dr. Gushchin is one of the few surgeons in the nation to perform ILI, Isolated Limb Infusion therapy, to treat a local and regional recurrence of cutenaeous melanoma of the lower leg. There is no effective chemotherapy that can prevent this tumor from growing and eventually becoming large, non-healing wounds with bleeding craters and repeated infections. Today, Isolated Limb Infusion or ILI, a minimally invasive technique that uses the same principle of regional high dose chemotherapy but through smaller catheters (cardiologists use similar catheters to study vessels of the heart) is the state of the art treatment for patients with locally recurrent melanoma and some other malignances.

MISCELLANEOUS: He has a number of honors and awards to his credit in his field, including an International Fellowship in the advanced treatment of gastric cancer at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Gushchin has authored numerous medical peer-reviewed publications, clinical abstracts, and presentations.
