Robert O. BACKGROUND: As Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mercy Medical Center, Dr. Atlas is committed to keeping Mercy on the leading-edge of care for women across their life-span. Dr. Atlas was previously with Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA, where he served as Medical Director of the High Risk Perinatal Unit. A 1987 graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA., Dr. Atlas completed his internship in OB/GYN at the University of Maryland Medical Systems in 1988 under Mercy’s Dr. Marcos Pupkin, OB/GYN, who was Program Director at the time. Board Certified in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Dr. Atlas has also served as Clinical Professor at DeSales University in Center Valley, PA, and as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Atlas is a member of numerous medical professional societies, including the American College of OB/GYN (ACOG), the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and the National Perinatal Association. He serves on the ACOG Executive Board and the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine Informatics Committee. MISCELLANEOUS: Dr. Atlas is involved with several local organizations and community committees. He is an active participant in the Governor's Children's Cabinet, Board of the Family League of Baltimore City, The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Baltimore City Health Department's "Baltimore Babies Born Healthy Leadership in Action Program" as one of 40 leaders in Maryland selected for demonstrated leadership capabilities and ability to impact birth outcomes in Baltimore. He is a member of the March of Dimes Board of Directors, Chairman of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) Advisory Board and an Honorary Board Member of Better BedRest. Additionally, Dr. Atlas serves as a member of the Perintatal Clinical Advisory Committee, the HEAL (Helping Everyone After Loss) Committee, the Baltimore City FIMR (Fetal and Infant Mortality Review) Committee, the Baltimore City Healthy Coalition: B’more Fit; B’more Healthy Babies Steering Committee – Strategies to Improve Birth Outcomes (SIBO) and the Maryland Board of Nursing Review Committee for Nurse Midwives. Dr. Atlas has numerous medical awards, abstracts, publications, chapters, presentations and media interviews to his credit. He is also a reviewer for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Journal of Managed Care and Obstetrics and Gynecology. As an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Division of Maternal and Fetal Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Atlas provides both teaching and mentoring to residents and medical students.
