A new report this week ranked maryland the 25th fattest state in the country
Fox45 Morning Show — interview with Mercy's Dr. Robert Davidson — August 31, 2007

A new report this week ranked Maryland the 25th fattest state in the country. 24% Of all Marylanders are obese. Dr. Davidson from Mercy Medical Center is here to help us sort this out. Good morning. How serious is this one in every four people is obese. It is a serious problem, we are seeing people one of every four walk into the office daily is obese or overweight it is becoming very concerning. Why is that? well, two reasons. One the concern is that the numbers haven't stopped rising its still rising, still becoming more of a problem. The other thing is obesity is contributing to high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, things that cause heart attacks, strokes, depression, insomnia. Are people eating too much? that's partially the reason. They are eating too much, not eating the right thing, portion control, eating the correct healthy foods is important but they are also not exercising enough. That has a lot to do with it. Sure. It is a simple equation you have to burn more calories than you take in each day if that is balanced on you take in more than you burn, you are going to gain weight. What do you tell people when they say i want to get this under control? first a lot of the counseling about the proper nutrition, diet, eating correct portions and then you find ways they can burn calories with exercise that's the way you start to change their lifestyle to change their habits. Have you seen evidence that -- evidence that people who are obese are in a lower socio-economic area that poverty goes hand-in-hand with obesity? I've reported before, but again, I've seen all socio-economic classes affected by obesity it doesn't discrim there's talk that the government needs to step in and get involved, do you -- do you think that would help? government would have a role as far as getting into the schools perhaps changing school lunches, encouraging physical education making it easier to get to exercise. Things of that nature. Dr. Davidson, we appreciate you coming in this morning. Thank you.

Doctors Debate Over Lyme Disease
Patients ache as doctors disagree about whether there is a chronic form of the tick-borne malady.
By Mary Carmichael
Newsweek — Aug. 6, 2007 issue - There's a debate raging over Lyme disease, although you'd never know it....

If Lyme is left undiagnosed and untreated, its consequences can be serious, including arthritis, meningitis, heart problems and inflammation of the brain. "The real secret," says Dr. Michael Zimring, director of the Center for Wilderness and Travel Medicine at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, "is to be able to recognize the disease early enough." Zimring would know. Several years ago his wife felt fluish and came down with an oval-shaped rash. Zimring wasn't sure what she had, but "knowing our backyard is loaded with ticks was enough," he says. He started his wife right away on one of the classic, effective antibiotics used to treat Lyme. When her medical tests came back, they proved him right. "I treated her for three weeks," he says, "and that was it. No problem."

Oral Treatment Not Recommended for PAD
By Kate McHugh, Ivanhoe Health Correspondent
ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — The role of oral anticoagulant agents in preventing complications in PAD patients was unknown — until now...

Paul Lucas, M.D., vascular surgeon at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., told Ivanhoe a patient's risk of falling, particularly with older patients, increases the incidence of dangerous bleeding when taking anticoagulants. "Anytime you thin the blood and affect that coagulation process, you're going to have an increased risk of bleeding," Dr. Lucas said. "If I see somebody with significant PAD that has had, say, a bypass, but is a significant fall risk, I'm probably going to rethink the anticoagulation," Dr. Lucas explained. "If they fall, and they have a known history of falling, God forbid, they could hit their head and have intercranial bleeding and have a more devastating problem than what they had before." Coumadin (warfarin) is a highly prescribed oral anticoagulant. Dr. Lucas added, blood thinners like coumadin are appropriate for some patients -- especially those at risk of heart attack, stroke and blood clots in the veins and arteries. So, prescribing these drugs, including a combination therapy like the one described in the study, needs to be done on a patient by patient basis, he said.

The Need for Hip Replacement
wsoctv.com "...Joseph Ciotola, M.D., an Orthopedic Surgeon with Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, says the anterior approach is more feasible with a special orthopaedic table. He uses one called the hana™ table. Unlike an operating table with a solid surface, the hana is split at the bottom, enabling the surgeon to move or rotate the leg independently of the other leg or the rest of the body. Prior to surgery, the patient's leg is placed in a position that drops the foot towards the floor. This elevates the front of the hip and enables the surgeon to access the joint without having to cut any muscle...."
