Doctor: How to stay healthy and illness-free when traveling abroad
By Linda Childers, InsWeb.com
April 24, 2013
InsWeb.com

Traveling abroad can be a dream come true, until a case of dehydration or diarrhea turns your vacation into a living nightmare.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that half of all Americans who travel for two weeks or more outside the United States will become ill. The good news is that putting your health at the top of your travel checklist can help ensure that a hospital visit doesn’t detour your much-anticipated trip.
Dr. Michael Zimring, director of the Center for Wilderness and Travel Medicine at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore and author of “Healthy Travel: Don’t Travel Without It,” shared with InsWeb.com his advice for staying healthy while traveling abroad.

"Inflammation is a normal process. Acute inflammatory responses [short-term inflammation of an injury like a sprained ankle] can cause pain, but are beneficial. Without those immune responses, used to heal and prevent infection, we'd all be in trouble," says David Maine, MD, director of the Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.
