Mercy Medical Center Sponsors "Music in Patterson Park" Concert Series

4th Year of Mercy Sponsorship Means 7 Free Concerts, June to August

For the fourth consecutive summer, Mercy Medical Center joins forces with the Friends of Patterson Park to present “Music in Patterson Park,” a series of seven free live musical concerts, June through August 2007.

The concerts will be held at Patterson Park, entering at East Lombard Street and S. Patterson Park Avenue. Concerts run from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The concerts will be held on the following dates:

Sunday June 17 (rain date June 20)
Sin Miedo- “One of the best straight-ahead salsa bands in D.C.,” says the Washington Post. Sin Miedo masterfully blends Afro-Cuban, Latin, Brazilian, and French ingredients into a hip-swaying, salsa picante. Frontman/keyboardist Didier Prossaird and percussionist Alfredo Mojica build the rhythmic backbone for a lush horn section and vocals in four languages.

Tuesday June 26 (rain date June 27)
Charles “Big Daddy” Stallings- The self-proclaimed “Mayor of B-Town,” this South Carolina-born trucker-turned-music man brings the real essence of the blues to Patterson Park. He describes his music as “the sound of Jimmy Reed seasoned with a little B.B. King.”

Sunday July 8 (rain date July 11)
Squeeze Bayou- Squeeze Bayou bring the heat and sweetness of a good jambalaya and the old-fashioned fund of a crawfish boil to Pagoda Hill. Their traditional, southwestern Louisiana-style Cajun and zydeco dance music was awarded the “Dehors de Nous” prize from Louisiana’s Cajun French Musical Society. Sung in Cajun French and seasoned with a hearty dose of fiddle, lap steel and accordion, these songs are made for dancing.

Tuesday July 24 (rain date July 25)
Stryker’s Posse- City
Paper’s Best Reggae Band, Stryker’s Posse stirs up a blend of dancehall and roots-and-culture reggae. Winning praise for energetic performances and original songwriting, Jamaican-born Ichelle Cole and Yvonne Deane-Hibbert have shared the stage with the likes of the Wailers and Toots and the Maytals.

Sunday August 5 (rain date August 8)
Marianne Matheny-Katz- “Think Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith,” writes Music Monthly’s James Nash of M2K frontwoman Marianne Matheny-Katz’s powerful voice. Two-time Billie Holiday-award winning vocalist and supporter of Patterson Park returns with Lafayette Gilchrist, Craig Alston, Todd Marcus and others to present an evening of cool vocal jazz.

Tuesday August 14 (rain date August 15)
Zim Zemarel- The smooth, big-band sounds of the Zim Zemarel Combo graced the stages of three presidential inaugural balls and accompanied stars such as Tony Bennett, Cab Calloway, and the Temptations. Enjoy swing-era sounds on the lawn, and don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Sunday August 19 (rain date August 22)
Good Deale Bluegrass- Back by popular demand, Good Deale Bluegrass brings “shore-billy” strumming to Patterson Park. This southern Maryland-style evening of fast and furious bluegrass features banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass and mandolin. Leading what the Washington Post calls the area’s “premier bluegrass band” is resophonic guitar star Mike Auldridge—who has worked with legends Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss.
