Mercy Medical Center And Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Join Forces For "Take Your Teacher To Work Day"

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School freshman, Kelly Casella, works alongside school president, Fr. John Swope, in the inpatient pharmacy at Mercy Medical Center in downtown Baltimore City during "Take Your Teacher To Work Day," Wednesday, November 10, 2010. Their tasks include assisting pharmacy technicians with administrative duties and making deliveries. A Mercy pharmacist reviews all medications for accuracy before they are distributed to patients.

The Mercy Medical Center - Cristo Rey partnership exposes students to professional work experience with the hope of inspiring students to consider health care as a profession. Kelly, who is 14 years old, has been interning at Mercy since September, and hopes to become a pharmacy tech in the future. Fr. Swope's younger brother, T.J. Swope, M.D., is a laparoscopic and general surgeon and Medical Director of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mercy.

Cristo Rey Jesuit’s Corporate Internship Program makes a private, college preparatory education affordable to young people from Baltimore City. Through CIP, each student contributes toward the cost of their education by working five full days each month in entry-level positions at 84 businesses and nonprofit organizations throughout Baltimore. The students are employees of the school’s Corporate Internship Program.

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is sponsored by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) order of religious, educating young men and women, and is located on South Chester Street in Baltimore City. Founded in 2007, the school provides a Catholic, college prep education to 314 Baltimore City young women and men in grades 9-12. Part of a national network of Catholic college prep schools aimed at preparing urban students for success in college and life, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is sponsored by the Maryland Jesuits.
