Drs. Armando Sardi And Vadim Gushchin Lead Course "On The Forefront Of Gastrointestinal Oncology" At Mercy

Surgical oncologists Drs.Vadim Gushchin and Armando Sardi of The Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy will lead "On the Forefront of Gastrointestinal Oncology," a course focusing on new technology and advanced treatments of the gastrointestinal tract, Saturday, Nov. 1st, 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Mercy Medical Center's Truman Semans Conference Room, 2nd floor of the Weinberg Center, 227 St. Paul Place.

This course is designed to educate participants in the latest advances in the management and treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies and liver disease. With a more in-depth understanding of these advances, better treatment alternatives can be evaluated and applied to patients with gastrointestinal and/or liver cancers.

The course agenda includes:

  • Advances in Targeted Therapy in Gastrointestinal Oncology
  • Curative and Palliative Options for Liver Cancer in 2008
  • Regional Percutaneous Techniques for Management of Liver Tumors
  • Current Approaches to Peritoneal Carcinomatosis of Gastrointestinal Origin
  • Challenges in Surgical Treatment of Adenocarcinoma of the Pancreas
  • Endoscopic Removal of Benign and Early Malignant Lesions of the Gastrointestinal Tract
  • Update on Radiation Therapy of Gastrointestinal Tract Malignancies

Guest speakers will include Daniel A. Laheru, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Michael C. Garofalo, M.D., Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Maryland Medical System. Other presenters will include physicians from Mercy Medical Center's staff, such as Paul J. Thuluvath, M.D., Medical Director of The Institute for Digestive Health and Liver Disease at Mercy; Sergey Kantsevoy, M.D., of the Institute for Digestive Health and Liver Disease; Drs. Sardi and Gushchin; and Robert Liddell, M.D. of Mercy's Interventional Radiology.
