Book illustrates Baltimore Mercy's story
In the world of academia, autumn is the traditional time for students to peruse course descriptions replete with required reading lists, assignments and exams.
This fall at Baltimore's Mercy Medical Center, employees will be encouraged to do some suggested reading of their own — chapter three of Mercy Stories, a one-of-a-kind volume begun almost a decade ago to record, explain and preserve the history and mission of a hospital that traces its roots back to 1874, when six Sisters of Mercy arrived from Dublin to take charge of a downtown dispensary for the indigent.
The book, which is displayed in the main lobby of the medical center, currently consists of 32 large, beautifully designed and illustrated pages of handmade paper that reflect the organization's past as well as its philosophic underpinnings through quotations, calligraphy, watercolor and collage. The book is the handiwork of sisters and associates connected with Mercy Medical Center, although a professional artist outside the Mercy family has joined the project...
