Mercy Dermatologist Dr. Oanh Lauring Featured In September 2008 Issue of O! The Oprah Magazine

Dr. Oanh Lauring, Baltimore-area dermatologist who has offices at Mercy Medical Center and at Overlea Personal Physicians, was featured in the September 2008 issue of O! THE OPRAH MAGAZINE as part of a special story about top 25 health care questions. Dr. Lauring was asked to address the question, "Do self-tanners cause cancer?" Here is her reply as it appears in the magazine:

Nope. The faux glow is delivered by dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which only interacts with dead surface cells on the skin to create a color change that simulates a tan for five to seven days. However, "Although self-tanners do not cause cancer, they generally don't give any protection against UVB or UVA, so it's still important to use sunscreen to prevent aging, sun damage and skin cancer."

Dr. Lauring will be featured on WBAL-TV11's "The Woman's Doctor" the week of September 1st to discuss the topic, "Melanoma Rates on the Rise for Younger Women?" The Woman's Doctor airs Mondays in the 5 p.m. newscast, Tuesday morning and Saturday morning at 9:40 a.m. when the featured physician appears live in-studio at WBAL to discuss the topic.
