Rheumatologist Dr. Marlyn Lorenzo Discusses Foods That Can Cause Rheumatoid Arthritis Flare-Ups

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that has no cure, and while it can be managed with medication, exercise and diet, doctors said certain foods can trigger painful flare-ups.

According to Mercy Medical Center rheumatologist Dr. Marlyn Lorenzo, foods high in saturated fats and trans fats are culprits that can aggravate rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

"Eggs are high in saturated fat. If you like eggs, the white is healthier because it doesn't have the saturated part. Red meats and some poultry -- if it's not the lean white meat, it can be more high in saturated fat," Dr. Lorenzo said.

Just over a year ago, Keshawn Tolbert, 23, was unexpectedly diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Since then, she manages it with medication and a healthy diet, but she also found that what Dr. Lorenzo said is pretty true.

"Mostly fried foods or anything greasy (is bad). I really think it's something with the grease that triggers my arthritis," she said. "My hands will get swollen, my knee and around my knees. Sometimes I have pains in my hips and even on my elbows, like, each joint on my main joint will be inflamed."

To reduce flare-ups, remember the benefits of fish.

"Fish have the good fats — omega-3s — and there are certain fish that have more of that, such as salmon, mackerel and sardines," Dr. Lorenzo said said.

Rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women than men. Patients should talk with their doctors about any food allergies they have because that could also affect their rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.
