Dr. Neil B. Rosenshein, Director, The Gynecologic Oncology Center at Mercy, Honored With The "Lifetime Achievement in Women's Health Award"

The Snowmass Institute, a women's health "think-tank" that offers industry leaders best-in-practice standards, innovations and trends in the market, convened its "Achieving Success in Women's Health Conference" this past May in Baltimore, MD. Part of the conference included the Institute's annual Women's Health Awards, presented in such categories as "Next General of Women's Health Leaders Award, "Innovation in Women's Health Award," and the "Lifetime Achievement in Women's Health Award," the latter being presented to Dr. Neil B. Rosenshein of Mercy Medical Center. Prior to opening The Center for Women's Health & Medicine in 1994, Mercy consulted members of the Snowmass Institute to gain insight and understanding about what it would take to make Mercy's center one of the leading women's centers in the U.S. — a recognition Mercy was awarded by Self Magazine in 1997. The article below was taken from the May/June 2008 issue of "The Ireland Report On Succeeding in Women's Health."

Neil Rosenshein, MD, Medical Director, The Weinberg Center for Women’s Health & Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, is the recipient of this year’s Award that recognizes a person who has dedicated his/her career to women’s health with outstanding professional accomplishments and innovative contributions.

Dr. Rosenshein is a Gynecologic Oncologist and a leader in the field of prevention, detection, and treatment of gynecologic malignancies. Since 1995, he has been the director of The Gynecology Center at Mercy Medical Center and Medical Director of The Center for Women’s Health & Medicine at Mercy since 2000. At the Gynecology Center, he has established a world-renowned medical team utilizing state of the art technology for the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological cancers.

In accepting the Award, Dr. Rosenshein graciously declared that it was not his award but that of the doctors, staff, and patients of The Weinberg Center. “It is my patients that I am most beholden to, everything we do at the Center is for them. I learn from them everyday.”

He also expressed his view that no patient is an island and cites his one-on-one interactions with his patients as the most gratifying aspect of his profession. True cancer success, he feels, is determined by not only being cancer free but by resuming a quality of life that is acceptable to patients.

As Medical Director of The Weinberg Center, he was a prime mover in its innovative development. The Center was carefully designed to offer women the quality of care they expect, the comfort and concern they desire, and an atmosphere of healing from the moment they enter, a sanctuary that brings together the natural elements to communicate the message of hope.

He continually challenges his team to make things easier for patients and to stay on the leading edge of women’s health and medicine. “Our success,” he says, “is based on the fact that we continually strive to enhance our services to meet the changing needs of women. I’m always talking to our staff about the importance of creating remarkable experiences.” He is a true advocate on behalf of women and a leader in the community educating women about the health issues they face on a daily basis.

In responding to the question of his most significant accomplishment, he says, “The ability to have helped many patients during the difficult time of having received the diagnosis of cancer or a complex gynecological problem and seeing them and their families return to normal life.” Today, The Weinberg Center for Women’s Health & Medicine is recognized as the leading center for women’s health in the metropolitan Baltimore area and beyond.
