More Than 360 Guests Attend 5th Annual "Nick And You" Fundraiser To Benefit Mercy's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

On June 10th, Mercy Medical Center presented "Nick Y Usted," the 5th annual “NICk and yoU” fundraiser, at The Center Club, to benefit the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Many of these infants are of low birth weight and thus critically ill upon admission. Mercy provides these infants with comprehensive care to ensure survival, eventual recovery and discharge home. Though the NICU serves a very high risk population, the survival rates exceed the national average.

The NICU is an important resource that saves the lives of hundreds of newborn infants each year. The event raised approximately $32,000.

Guests enjoyed foods and refreshments representing the distinct flavors and sounds of Latin America. Music included salsa and cha-cha, while foods were provided by Alexander's Tavern, Barefoot Wine, The Center Club, Chef's Expressions, DiWine Spirits and Wine Shoppe, FIJI Water, Hyatt Regency Baltimore, Icedgems Baking, Intercontinental Harbor Court, La Scala, Lebanese Taverna, Linwoods, Mari Luna Latin Grille, The Reserve, and the Tremont Grand.

More than 360 guests were on hand to enjoy cocktails, raffles, gift drawings, etc. Other highlights included a guest appearance by WMIX Mix106.5’s JoJo Girard and a vendor contest with celebrity judges Suzanne Collins of WJZ-TV13, Carlos Garcia of the Baltimore Blast and Patti Neumann of CITYPEEK. Icedgems Baking took the prize for “Best Theme Preparation,” while Linwood’s won for “Best Food.”

According to Thomas R. Mullen, President and CEO of Mercy Medical Center, each year the hospital “does a play on words” for the “Nick and You” event. “Past themes have included St. Nick and You, a ‘Christmas in July’ theme, and we’ve done ‘Nick at Nite,’ which featured a golden age of TV theme,” Mullen explained.

NICK AND YOU benefits Mercy’s NICU is a Level III-B intensive care nursery that delivers comprehensive care for babies who are born extremely premature, including those born as soon as 17 weeks early (23 weeks gestation). Also care for are those born with congenital anomalies, and any infant who requires special monitoring and care in the newborn period. The unit admits 350-450 babies each year. Led by the NICU Medical Director, Susan J. Dulkerian, M.D., Mercy's NICU is equipped with the latest technologies to diagnose, monitor and treat newborn diseases and conditions.

In July 2010, Mercy’s NICU will be featured in the new Discovery Health television series, “NICU,” providing insights into the lives of those who work in the NICU as they tell the real-life stories of families who have infants on the unit.
