BikeJam 2010

Mercy's Dr. David Scharff Participant In 12th Annual "BikeJam 2010"

Baltimore BikeJam 2010, a full day of high caliber pro-am cycling, featuring The Kelly Cup Pro Race, will be held on Sunday, May 23rd, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature games, bike safety, helmet giveaways, live music, and other family summer fun. This event is free and open to the public and will be held in Patterson Park in Baltimore City.

BikeJam is the mid-Atlantic’s largest cycling festival now in its 12th year at historic Patterson Park near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The event features Baltimore’s largest pro-am cycling race, The Kelly Cup. These races are sanctioned by the U.S. Cycling Federation (USCF), thus attracting professional and amateur racers from the mid-Atlantic and throughout North America. Past BikeJam races have included former Olympic and Tour D’France participants. More than 8,000 spectators and 1,200 participants are expected.

Bike Jam promoter and participant Dr. David Scharff (board certified, internal medicine) of Mercy Medical Center has served as president of Lateral Stress Velo, a bicycle club and racing team from Baltimore. LSV includes mountain bikers and road bikers and are a member of both National Off Road Biking Association (NORBA) and the United States Cycling Federation (USCF).

The event will also highlights World Bicycle Relief (worldbicyclerelief.org). World Bicycle Relief was founded in 2005 by SRAM Corporation and Trek Bicycle in response to the December 2004 tsunami that swept the Indian Ocean. In partnership with World Vision Sri Lanka, this project provided more than 24,000 locally manufactured bicycles to carefully selected men, women and children in greatest need. Due to the success of Project Tsunami, World Bicycle Relief partnered with relief organizations to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in Zambia to provide 23,000 bicycles to community home-based care volunteers, disease prevention educators and vulnerable households.
