(Baltimore,MD) – U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), a long-time advocate for preventive health services for both women and men, will participate in a special panel discussion regarding issues surrounding key medical screenings like mammograms, Saturday, May 22nd, 10-11:30 a.m. in the lobby of Weinberg Center, 227 St. Paul Place, home to the renowned Weinberg Center for Women’s Health and Medicine at Mercy.

In addition, Mercy medical staff will be performing screening mammograms and PSA/digital exams for breast and prostate on the 5th floor of the Weinberg Center for those who pre-register (please note, exams will not be available for walk-ups that morning). Mammograms and PSA/digital exams will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until approximately 2 p.m.

Rep. Cummings will moderate the morning panel which will include breast cancer surgeons Dr. Dalliah Black and Dr. Neil B. Friedman, Director, The Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy; radiologist Dr. Jean Warner, Director, The Tyanna O’Brien Center for Women’s Imaging; gynecologic oncologist Dr. Hyung S. Ryu of The Gynecology Center at Mercy; and urologist Dr. Stanley Silber of The Urology Specialists of Maryland.

“I am proud to have voted for comprehensive healthcare reform,” said Cummings. “However, fixing the way we deliver healthcare is only part of the way we improve the health of our nation. Screening and other preventive measures can help Americans live longer, happier, healthier lives. I am very happy to be able to have this important discussion at Mercy. I want to remind everyone: Talk to your doctor to assess the screenings that are right for you. It could save your life.”

Thomas R. Mullen, President and CEO of Mercy Health Services, Mercy Medical Center, will provide opening remarks and introduce Rep. Cummings.

“Congressman Cummings has long championed the importance of preventive health care services, most recently leading a press conference at Mercy last fall to stress the importance of mammograms for women age 40 and above,” Mr. Mullen said. “It is the mission of the Sisters of Mercy to care for the sick, no matter their economic and social condition, and there may be no more powerful tool against disease than education. It’s a mission Mr. Cummings shares in and so we are extremely pleased to have him take part in this special panel discussion and day of low-cost screenings here at Mercy,” he added.

Topics of discussion will include the importance of mammography, radiation levels in screening tests, prostate health and the latest treatment modalities in prostate cancer and breast cancer surgery, as well as issues regarding cervical, ovarian, uterine and other gynecologic cancers.

A complimentary continental breakfast, free parking for Mercy’s Saratoga garage, and complimentary skin analysis and low-cost spa treatments courtesy of the Medi Spa at Mercy will be featured. The Medi Spa will also be raffling a free acupuncture session.
