Mercy Medical Center Has Numerous Winners in The Daily Record's 2007 Health Care Heroes Awasrds Competition
Dr. Armando Sardi, Director, The Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy; Dr. Barbara Jaeger, Director, Women’s Imaging; Dr. Maria Jacobs, Director, Radiation Oncology; and the staff of the Supportive Housing and Mercy Children’s Health Outreach (MCHOP) programs were all named WINNERS in The Daily Record’s 2007 Health Care Heroes competition. Awardees were honored at a celebratory breakfast held on Wednesday, March 28th at the Baltimore Hyatt Regency Hotel.
In a competition that featured approximately 300 nominees, Mercy and Stella Maris had finalists in several categories:

According to the Health Care Heroes supplemental magazine, Dr. Armando Sardi was recognized for his work as “a leader and pioneer in the field of intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy, or (IPHC), a difficult procedure that can last 15 hours or more.” As director of the Institute for Cancer Care, Dr. Sardi was noted for his efforts in assembling a top team of physicians, staff and medical professionals.
Dr. Maria Jacobs was recognized for the development of the Radiation Oncology Center, part of the acclaimed Weinberg Center at Mercy. Dr. Jacobs has taken the leadership role ni the hospital’s part of a national study regarding the FDA-approved MammoSite device for the delivery of radiation to treat cancer patients.
Dr. Barbara Jaeger was cited for her work in developing the “HeartMammo Protocol” whereby Mercy radiologists will note the presence of breast vascular calcifications on the patient’s mammography report and inform the patient and her primary care physician. Dr. Jaeger was also recognized for offering patients the Mammopad which aids in the compression of the breast for a better image while providing a more comfortable experience for the patient.
Now celebrating their 10 year anniversaries, the Mercy Supportive Housing Program and the Mercy Children’s Health Outreach Project (MCHOP) were both recognized for their efforts to help homeless individuals and families. MCHOP staff visit homeless shelters and provide health care assessments to children. The Supportive Housing Program helps homeless people make the transition from temporary to permanent housing.
