Baltimore, MD – Dr. Kathy J. Helzlsouer, Director of the
Prevention and Research Center at Mercy Medical Center, has been
named one of 2006 Maryland's TOP 100 WOMEN.
The Daily Record created Maryland’s Top 100 Women 10 years
ago to draw attention to the contributions being made by women
throughout the state. This annual program is designed to recognize
women who not only have achieved professional success, but who
also have contributed to bettering the communities in which they
work and live. Additionally, they play an active role in mentoring
the younger generation of businesspeople.
Nominations for this award are solicited from economic development
agencies, chambers of commerce, women’s organizations and
the business community at large each year from May through December.
This year The Daily Record received more than 400 nominations
with 250 total applications which were pared to 150 by a preliminary
round of judging.
Each nominee is asked to supply an application outlining her
educational and career history, professional and community involvement,
and corporate and nonprofit board membership.
Dr. Helzlsouer is recognized for her work in women's preventive
medicine and cancer research.
Dr. Helzlsourer earned her M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh
School of Medicine in 1979 and her M.H.S. in Epidemiology from
The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health
(now the Bloomberg School of Public Health) in 1988. Her professional
affiliations include membership in the American Association for
Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the
American Society of Preventive Oncology, the Society for Epidemiologic
Research, the American Epidemiological Society and the International
Epidemiological Association.
