According to Dr. Helzlsouer, "We bring to the project expertise regarding the therapeutic uses of music and work with the Maryland State Boychoir to develop the combined lecture and music format. Our research has demonstrated the benefit of mind-body medicine on the healing process for cancer survivors and others facing the challenges of serious or chronic illness. This program will show in a tangible and enjoyable way the potential benefit of music as part of the healing process," she said.
In addition to the Choir, renowned Irish accordionist Billy McComiskey will also perform. Mr. McComiskey is a Brooklyn native who began playing the button accordion at six years old, inspired by his uncle’s playing. At age 15, the budding box player was taken under the wing of the legendary Sean McGlynn. McComiskey is a master of the East Galway accordion style that characterizes the playing of so many of New York’s best accordionists. He has recorded with the Irish Tradition, Trian and as a soloist, his compositional skills and his All-Ireland championships attest to McComiskey’s mastery of the button box. The concert will be performed by The Maryland State Boychoir's Tour Choir, Concert Choir and Changed Voice Choir. Other highlights include live and silent auctions. Admission is $50 per person for VIP level which includes the concert, a cocktail reception and the auctions. General admission is $25 per person and includes the concert and auctions.

The Prevention and Research Center was established in 2004 at Mercy to conduct research and develop programs to improve the health and well-being of patients and their families. These initiatives include the BE WELL, STAY HEALTHY program which addresses the issue of consistent fatigue associated with cancer treatment; BE WELL, STAY HEALTHY KIDS! which offers children an opportunity to meet and share with other children and teens whose parents have been diagnosed with cancer; the CANCER SURVIVOR CONSULTATION SERVICE which assists patients in their transition from cancer patient to cancer survivor; the CANCER PREVENTION AND GENETIC COUNSELING SERVICE, a clinical program that offers a complete evaluation of family history and other factors that may increase the risk of developing certain cancers; and the BE WELL, STAY HEALTHY FAMILIES program which provides girls and women from high risk families with education and tools needed to cope with the stress and anxiety associated with their cancer risk, improve lifestyle choices that can reduce risk and provide guidance through the maze of medical management decisions they may face.
