Medical Oncologist Dr. David Riseberg And Mercy Dietitian Kelly O'Connor Discuss Diet's Role In The Prevention Of Cancer
Many experts have noted that it may be possible to reduce your risk for cancer by eating certain foods and avoiding others.
Mercy Medical Center medical oncologist Dr. David Riseberg of The Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy said following the anti-cancer diet can help lower the risk of cancer.
"That's what we have the most data on … Better recovery from cancer, few recurrences of cancer and have lower incidences of cancer," Dr. Riseberg said.
Mercy dietician Kelly O'Connor, RD, LD, said certain seasonings such as turmeric, ginger and garlic may be helpful.
"There's a little bit of information that when used in India… the risk of cancer was slightly decreased," O'Connor said.
She said leafy vegetables, whole grains and even a little dark chocolate are good.
"Adding fiber in the form of whole grains, and fruits and vegetables has a positive correlation to a decreased risk of cancer," O'Connor said.
Foods to avoid on the anti-cancer diet include high fat foods, fried foods and too much alcohol.
