Mercy Announces Arrival of World Renowned Surgical Oncologist Armando Sardi, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Baltimore, MD – Mercy Medical Center has announced that
Armando R. Sardi, M.D., F.A.C.S., an internationally renowned
cancer surgeon, has joined the downtown hospital as director of
the new Institute for Cancer Care at Mercy and head of Surgical
Oncology. Dr. Sardi, who begins his new duties on Feb. 1, 2006,
will be located on the 4th floor of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg
Center at 227 St. Paul Place.
Dr. Sardi is a surgical oncologist with a special interest in
the treatment of intra-abdominal malignancies. He also is one
of a select few surgical oncologists in the world who employes
leading-edge procedures such as IPHC (Intraperitoneal Hyperthermic
Chemotherapy) to treat advanced stages of abdominal cancers.
“Because IPHC requires extraordinary skill and stamina
on the part of the surgical team, only a small number of hospitals
nationwide offer patients this treatment option, and Mercy is
now one of these hospitals,” Dr. Sardi said.
“It is very exciting to join Mercy’s team of highly
skilled and experienced physicians, nurses and clinical staff.
Mercy has a tremendous reputation for providing top quality care
and I look forward to doing my part to add to that reputation,”
Dr. Sardi added.
Dr. Sardi comes to Mercy from St. Agnes Healthcare where he served
as Chief of Surgical Oncology and medical director of their Clinical
Research Center. He earned his medical degree in his native South
America at the Universidad del Valle in Colombia. After graduation,
he completed residency training at the Harbor Hospital Center
and St. Agnes. His fellowship in oncologic surgery was completed
at The Ohio State University.
“The addition of Dr. Sardi to our staff is another example
of the mission of the Sisters of Mercy in action—to provide
our patients with access to the best care possible. Mercy continues
to grow and take those steps to meet our patient’s needs,”
said Thomas R. Mullen, president and CEO of Mercy Health Services.
Dr. Sardi formerly practiced as a surgical oncologist at the
Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, and was the founding Chief of Surgical
Oncology at Health Care International in Glasgow. He is the author
of more than 85 peer-reviewed publications and has given over
140 presentations on the topic of surgical oncology both nationally
and internationally.
