The Baltimore Women's 5K Classic Works With Mercy's Gynecologic Oncology Center To Benefit Cancer Patients

The Baltimore Women's 5K Classic (BWC www.baltimorewomensclassic.com), recently made another financial donation to Mercy's Gynecologic Oncology Center for support of women receiving treatment for gynecologic cancer. All funds directly benefit patients. This partnership will expand beyond The Gynecologic Oncology Center at Mercy to all 8 Centers of Excellence that Dr. Neil B. Rosenshein, Center director, has created throughout the state of Maryland.

"The Baltimore Women's Classic 5K has a mission to encourage women throughout the region to take up the challenge, not merely to run, but to live healthier lives. (To assist and encourage women to adopt a healthier lifestyle, the BWC holds an 8 week pre race training program offering many levels from walking to racing, at 6 locations, over 900 women enrolled in the 8 week program in 2010). It's a mission very much in keeping with our own here at Mercy as we work with patients to foster healthier lifestyles. And just as the BWC continues to grow--starting with 122 participants to now over 2,500 so do we, as The Gynecologic Collaborative now brings Mercy's gyn-cancer services to eight hospitals throughout the state of Maryland. Given this common ground, it's a natural partnership, a win-win for all parties involved," Dr. Rosenshein said.

Mercy uses these funds to help cancer patients with things like housecleaning, meals and groceries, childcare services, home care services, prescriptions and some therapeutic services provided by the Medi Spa at Mercy. In addition, Mercy is now providing gynecologic cancer patients with "comfort bags"--tote bags that feature items like a fleece blanket, water bottle, teaching tools to help patients deal with their diagnosis, etc. These are especially helpful for newly diagnosed patients.
