Sisters of Mercy to Recognize U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski For Efforts to Bring Digital Mammography to Mercy
On Tuesday, January 15th, 2008, The Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Medical Center will recognize U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski in honor of the Senator’s efforts in championing the Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS) and Educational FY2008 Appropriations Bill, recently passed by Congress, that will provide Mercy with funding to convert the hospital’s film-based mammography to computerized digital mammography.
Digital mammography is a mammography system where x-ray film is replaced by solid-state detectors that convert x-rays into electric signals. These detectors are similar to those found in digital cameras. The electrical signals are used to produce images of the breast that can be seen on a computer screen or printed on special films to look like regular mammograms.
Ceremonies are to be held on Jan. 15th, 11:15 a.m. to 12 noon in the atrium, 5th floor, The Weinberg Center for Women’s Health and Medicine, outside Women’s Imaging, 227 St. Paul Street in Baltimore City.
Attendees will include Senator Barbara A. Mikulski; Sister Helen Amos, RSM, Executive Chair, Board of Trustees, Mercy Health Services; Thomas Mullen, President and CEO, Mercy Health Services, Mercy Medical Center; Dr. Barbara Jaeger, Director, Women’s Imaging; Dr. Neil B. Friedman, Director, The Hoffberger Breast Center; members of the Mercy Board of Trustees; numerous breast cancer survivors, members of the Sisters of Mercy and medical staff.
Mercy honored Senator Mikulski last February 2007 with the unveiling of a special art work, now in the Weinberg Center 5th floor atrium, in recognition of the Senator’s efforts in championing the Mammography Quality Standards Act.
