Contributing to Mercy: Giving to Mercy
If any person.does a favor to the Sisters of Mercy or even speaks
kindly of their institute, it must be noted in the Annals and
all future generations of the Order must testify gratitude by
their prayers for the Benefactor. —Catherine
McAuley, Founder, Sisters of Mercy
In
19th century Dublin, Ireland, a young woman became aware
of the poverty in her community and was determined to use her wealth
to assist those in need. Catherine McAuleys inheritance created
the House of Mercy, a home for unprotected women seeking honest
employment and a school for poor children. When other women joined
her in service to the poor, Catherine established the Sisters of
Mercy to ensure the continuity of her mission.
That mission arrived in Baltimore in 1874, when six Sisters of
Mercy were invited by a group of eminent physicians to administer
the hospital known today as Mercy Medical Center. In the years since,
the Sisters of Mercy expanded Catherine McAuleys vision and
established Mercy and Stella Maris as places where all may find
compassionate care, regardless of their background, religion or
ability to pay.
In order to continue that mission, Mercy relies on the generosity
of its friends in the community. Mercy offers a variety of choices
in giving, all of which are designed with the donor in mind. Because
Mercy values its benefactors as an important part in moving our
mission forward, we work with individuals to develop the giving
option that most suits the donor and his or her family.
