Glucose Monitors At The Diabetes Center at Mercy we use the newest blood glucose monitors available. We want to make your ability to monitor your blood glucose levels as simple, quick and painless as possible. Making use of the latest technology allows us to use new monitors that are quick, cause minimal bleeding and can access alternative sites on your body. Using the Continuous Glucose Monitoring System in conjunction with state-of-the art monitors, we can download three days worth of detailed blood glucose readings on our computer and produce a graph which gives you a great visual map of "where your blood sugar has been" and how food, medication and other factors have affected it. Visual Aids The Mercy Diabetes Team also makes use of visual aids to bring home important points about managing diabetes. Because we do not put our patients on cookie-cutter diets and treatment plans, our approach is person centered and unique. We use food models to review food choices and make as vivid as possible our philosophy that You Choose What You Eat. We use actual labels from popular foods to illustrate how important picking up the right food at the grocery store is. We want to help our patients become grocery savvy and empowered to eat in a way that leads to normal blood glucose levels. We actually keep on hand plexiglass tubes with sugar and fat samples to show you how much sugar and fat are actually in popular foods our patients might choose. This way our patients have a concrete way of understanding diet choices better. |
