Oral Insulin Spray Studies | Navigator Trial

Study Goal

The goal of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of the oral insulin (100 units) in combination with failing oral agents to control post-prandial glucose in Type-2 diabetic patients after standard meal challenges at breakfast, lunch and dinnertime

Method
  • Crossover study
  • CGMS sensor placed subcutaneously prior to commencement of study
  • Day One - administer oral insulin (100 units) via the RapidMist device in combination with oral tablets with each meal
  • Day Two – administer oral hypoglycemic agents only with each meal
  • Measure blood glucose with MiniMed CGMS sensor

Results

Conclusions

  • Oral Insulin taken at meal times was associated with a significantly lower postprandial glucose rise (9% vs 27%, p<0.001) when compared with their oral agents alone
  • Oralin can be used effectively with failing oral agents as an add-on therapy to achieve better control on meal related glucose rise and avoid future diabetic complications
