Introduction-Current Trend In Treatment Of Type-2 Diabetes

  • Type-2 diabetics are physiologically insulin resistant. Upon failing on diet and exercise, they are put on one or more oral agents. The UKPDS Study proved that in type-2 DM glycemic control can decrease triopathy. However, it also showed how sulfonylureas and Metformin fail over time.

  • Oral agents are used too much and too long as the first-line and second line therapy to treat diabetes. Patients are most frequently on double or triple or quadruple combination of oral agents. Over worked pancreas is unable to produce insulin required for normoglycemia. As a consequence of this, most patients may suffer from symptoms of chronic hyperglycemia and diabetic complications.

  • The major limitation of introduction of insulin for treatment of type-2 diabetes is the need for injections. Injections are often painful, inconvenient and frequently patients refuse to go on insulin therapy. As a consequence, insulin is introduced to the patients as the last treatment option when everything else has failed.

  • An alternative to this limitation would be the introduction of a pain free, needle free Oral Insulin Spray formulation which may improve glycemic control.
