Our Philosophy
The Diabetes Center at Mercy has a strong
philosophy when it comes to nutritional concerns and diabetes. We do
not put people on diets. We help you learn to choose the right food at
the right time.
When you join the Mercy Diabetes Team
we will provide knowledge and information about eating well. We will help
you understand why choosing the right food at the right time will
make you feel so much better.
Carbohydrates raise the blood sugar, so
controlling the amount of carbohydrates that you eat is of prime importance.
We will work with you to:
- identify your lifestyle.
- identify your food likes and dislikes.
- design a meal plan that works for you and one that you can live
happily with.
- help you to learn to manage parties and special occasions while
still maintaining good blood sugar control.
We believe that you are the one in
control of your eating and you alone will make the choice of what you
will eat.
The challenge is to eat what you want
and to keep your blood glucose under control at the same time.
For example: a Nestles Crunch chocolate bar is basically equal
to 2 pieces of buttered bread. Some
times you might pick the bread and sometimes you might pick the chocolate.
The key is in the understanding of the choices that you have. We strive
to help you to make choices that are in your own best interest and that
satisfy your needs. |
