Clinical Conditions & Program Offerings

The physicians of The Vascular Center at Mercy specialize in advanced strategies to treat vascular (circulatory) diseases. Their expertise includes minimally invasive approaches using endovascular, open and combined techniques to enhance patient outcomes with the least possible surgical trauma. The physicians focus on arterial diseases caused by aneurysms (abnormally widened arteries) and blockages usually caused by cholesterol-containing material that restricts the flow of blood. In addition, they focus on problems of veins producing swollen legs and varicose veins.

The physicians at The Vascular Center at Mercy offer:

Doppler and Ultrasound
Non-invasive techniques using Doppler and Ultrasound have become the standard way of establishing the presence of arterial blockages in many areas of the body. Arteriograms (dye studies) that were previously employed can be largely avoided, since the location and extent of blockages in the arteries is established quickly and painlessly in Mercy’s vascular laboratory. Patients can then proceed directly to treatment.

Angioplasty and Stenting
New technologies enable the surgeons to open arterial blockages in many areas of the body by means of new techniques called endovascular therapy. These techniques include balloon angioplasty and stenting. Diseased vessels are approached from the inside and are opened without the need for major surgical incisions. Patients typically have a much shorter hospital stay and better results. When blockages are too extensive, employing a combination of traditional surgical techniques and new endovascular modalities can lessen the size of incisions.

Vascular Treatment for Diabetes Patients
Vascular disease can result from diabetes that is not well controlled. High glucose damages blood vessels and can lead to decreased circulation particularly in the vessels between the knee and foot. Other vessels can be affected also. Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. The Diabetes Center at Mercy is a resource available to help diabetes patients with vascular disease.
