Charles C. Edwards, M.D.Charles C. Edwards, M.D., Founder and Director of The Maryland Spine Center, received his education at Duke University, University of Maryland Medical School, and Yale University for Orthopedic and Spinal Surgery. Following his education at Yale, he returned to the University of Maryland where he served as Chief of Shock-Trauma Orthopedics, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, and tenured Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. He is the Director of the Maryland Spinal Fellowship program. Dr. Edwards is recognized as one of the nation’s most prominent spinal and orthopedic surgeons. He has developed many new procedures to improve surgical results and conducted extensive clinical research. Based on this work, Dr. Edwards has published more than 150 articles and chapters, presented more than 300 lectures at national meetings, and holds 19 medical patents. Dr. Edwards has served as President of the Orthopedic Trauma Association, Director of the Spinal Fixation Study Group, and is presently a member of all major spine organizations, including the Scoliosis Research Society. He has received numerous research and teaching awards, clinical honors, and more than 50 guest professorships.

Edwards, II, M.D., Medical Director of the Spine Clinic, received his education at Washington & Lee University, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude and Honors in Engineering. He attended the University of Maryland Medical School where he graduated with AOA honors. Dr. Edwards completed his Orthopedic Surgical Residency at Emory University in Atlanta and received advanced training in the management of adult and pediatric spinal deformity at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Edwards’ research interests include the management of nerve compression disorders in the cervical spine and the treatment of major spinal deformities in children and adults. Dr. Edwards brings special expertise in the areas of minimally invasive spine surgery and microscopic techniques. In addition, he has an extensive background in the treatment of both spinal deformity and complex degenerative conditions using state-of-the-art methods. He is a member of the esteemed Spinal Deformity Study Group and is currently the Section Editor for the Scoliosis and Spondylolisthesis sections of The Textbook of Spinal Surgery, 3rd Edition (in press). Dr. Edwards has been the invited presenter of more than 45 scientific studies at national scientific meetings. He is an author of 32 research papers and textbook chapters. Research honors include the Best Clinical Paper at the European Cervical Spine Research Society Meeting. Brian D. Steinmetz, D.O., received his medical degree from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Athens, Ohio, and was honored with the school's Humanitarian Award. He completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, where he served as a Chief Resident and was presented their Academic Excellence Award on three occasions. Dr. Steinmetz completed an Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine fellowship at the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore/Orthopedic and Spine Specialists of York, Pennsylvania. He is currently Board Eligible in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.
Dr. Steinmetz provides comprehensive care with a goal-oriented approach to rehabilitation, emphasizing the importance of therapeutic exercise to improve function and overall health. His clinical interests include treatment of conditions such as neck pain, low back pain, radiculopathy (sciatica), sacroiliac joint pain, osteoporosis, spinal compression fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, joint pain, tendon disorders, and work-related or athletic injures.
Dr. Steinmetz is specially trained in minimally invasive, non-surgical techniques for spine-related pain. He has unique expertise using ultrasound imaging to diagnose musculoskeletal disorders and extensive training performing electrodiagnostic studies (EMG) to diagnose nerve entrapment syndromes.
Dr. Steinmetz has published on several topics including traumatic brain injury (concussion) and spinal cord stimulation for pain. He recently co-authored two chapters in the first edition of the textbook Altas of Image-Guided Interventional Spine Procedures.

Mara Vucich, D.O., graduated from the honors program at the University of Maryland College Park with a degree in Biology and an emphasis in neurophysiology. She then graduated from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Ohio, where she served as chief resident and graduate medical education committee representative.
Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Vucich specializes in treating painful spine, joint, muscle, and nerve conditions successfully without surgery. With a special interest in evaluation and treatment to improve function and quality of life as it relates to spinal disorders, some of the conditions Dr. Vucich treats include arthritis and degeneration of the spine, back and neck strains, disc herniations, whiplash, torticollis, radiculopathy, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, compression fractures, and myofascial pain of the neck and back. Dr. Vucich’s research experience has included studies in dance medicine and sports medicine. She has served as a board member for a dance company and staffed sports medicine clinics.
Physician Assistants
Lisa graduated from University of Maryland Baltimore County with an undergraduate degree in Health Science and Policy. She then obtained a graduate certificate in Physician Assistance Studies from the Anne Arundel Community College, Graduate Studies Program, in Arnold, Maryland. She has specialized in orthopedic foot and ankle and most recently in orthopedic spine. Lisa’s primary functions include performing pre- and post-operative patient examinations in the Maryland Spine Clinic, assisting in spinal surgery, and functioning as the research coordinator at The Maryland Spine Center.
Jennifer graduated from Gannon University, Erie, Pennsylvania, with a bachelor’s degree in Health Science and a master’s degree in Physician Assistance Studies. She has specialized in general orthopedics, including hips, knees, and shoulders, and most recently in orthopedic spine. Jennifer’s primary functions include the post-operative management of The Maryland Spine Center’s inpatients and assisting in spinal surgery.
