Center for Restorative Therapies (PT/OT/Speech):
Clinical Conditions & Program Offerings
For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call The Center
for Restorative Therapies at 410-659-2933.
Osteoporosis Program
This program focuses on education and treatment
of those patients experiencing pain and who are at risk for
falls and fractures secondary to loss of bone density. An
initial assessment determines strength, range of motion,
balance, and fall risk. Treatment includes patient education
about the disease process, avoidance of injurious or provocative
movements or activities, modifications to daily activities,
a therapeutic exercise program and pain management.
Moving On
This program is coordinated with The Hoffberger
Breast Center for those patients preparing for breast
surgery. Prior to surgery, base line measurements of motion
and arm
girth are taken and the patient is educated in post-surgical
positioning, exercise and scar management.
Once healing has occurred, patients will have the opportunity
to participate in a more advanced exercise and fitness program
through The Center for Restorative Therapies and our relationship
with Brick Bodies Fitness to facilitate transition to a healthy
lifestyle.
Lymphedema Management
Swelling secondary to poor lymphatic function may
occur in the upper or lower extremity following breast or
pelvic surgery. This may cause a loss of range of motion
and functional use of the extremity. Manual lymphatic drainage,
exercise and compression garments are effective interventions
offered by the nationally certified staff of The Center for
Restorative Therapies.

Sportsmetrics
Offered in conjunction with The
Orthopedic Program for Women, Sportsmetrics is a training program
for injury prevention and performance enhancement. It has
been proven to decrease the risk of serious knee injuries
in female athletes, increase vertical jump height up to 4
inches, and decrease the muscle imbalance between the quadriceps
and hamstring muscles. The certified staff of The Center
for Restorative Therapise can design a program to target
skills for performance enhancement in a specific sport.
Vital Stim Swallowing Program
Vital stim uses electrical stimulation to retrain
the pharyngeal muscles in the throat and increase swallowing
function for patients with pharyngeal swallowing problems
caused by cancer, stroke, diabetes or other neurological
disorders.
Bell’s Palsy Program
Facial paralysis secondary to a viral infection
causes a condition known as Bell’s Palsy. Speech therapy
can be an effective treatment using electrical stimulation
to prevent muscle atrophy during nerve recovery, facilitate
muscle function and improve facial symmetry. The treatment
is supplemented with a series of home exercises.
Anodyne Therapy
The Anodyne Therapy System emits monochromatic infrared
photo energy (MIRE) to substantially increase local circulation
and reduce pain. This modality is primarily used in the treatment
of diabetic patients with
peripheral neuropathy who present with burning pain, sleepless
nights, chronic wounds and difficulty walking, which may
increase the risk for falling. The Center for Restorative
Therapies is one of only a few facilities in the state that
offers this treatment.

Vestibular Rehabilitation
Vestibular rehab is a non-invasive assessment and
treatment of dizziness, vertigo or loss of balance. It involves
a series of activities designed to help patients accommodate
to dizziness or other symptoms caused by inadequate or inappropriate
information from the inner ear. Evaluation includes balance
assessment and fall prevention.
Biomechanical Evaluation of the Foot and
Lower Extremity Gait Analysis
The EMED and PEDAR system are sophisticated tools
used to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of foot pathology.
The EMED platform system evaluates the amount of pressure,
location and time of pressure on the bottom of the foot when
standing or walking. This analysis assists the physician
in making a differential diagnosis of foot symptoms and in
evaluating surgical outcomes in order to choose the optimum
treatment for the patient. The PEDAR system is an in-the-shoe
foot pressure analysis system which is critical in assessing
foot pain and treatment options such as foot orthoses.
Total Contact Casting
This is considered the gold standard for treatment
of neuropathic plantar foot ulcers and neuropathic foot fractures.
The total contact cast is a specially designed and padded
short leg walking cast that promotes the healing of plantar
foot ulcers or fractures while allowing most patients to
continue to walk and function normally. The cast reduces
pressure over the wound site, redistributes the weight bearing
load, decreases the spread of infection, limits the stress
on granulation tissue and skin edges while protecting the
foot from further trauma. As swelling decreases microcirculation
is improved.

Custom Foot Orthotic Fabrication
Custom foot orthotics may be indicated for people
experiencing lower extremity or back pain when walking or
running. Rigid or semi-rigid custom foot orthoses are used
to align the foot into an optimal position for normal function.
Custom accommodative foot orthoses are designed to accommodate
foot deformities or decrease weight on parts of the foot.
Mercy’s
Foot & Ankle physical
therapists can analyze walking or running patterns to determine
if a
modification to footwear is indicated and which one would
best reduce the patient’s symptoms and or improve function.
Patients are evaluated in The Center for Restorative Therapies
and certain orthotics or shoe modifications can be done on
site.
Functional Capacity Evaluations
Certified therapists perform a comprehensive evaluation
utilizing sophisticated equipment to test and or simulate
performance of functional tasks such as lifting, gripping,
pushing or pulling. This information assists the physician
in determining a patient’s ability to safely perform
job tasks, activities of daily living or determine alternative
treatment interventions.
Balance Program
Balance problems can occur at any age as a result of
nerve or muscle injuries, fractures, surgery, general weakness,
and sports injuries. Physical therapists evaluate each patient
and develop an individualized treatment program using exercise
and activities that improve motion, strength and the ability to
compensate for surface changes, residual deficits such as sensory
loss, or other external forces that can challenge a patient’s
stability. The result is improved mobility and function, decreased
risk of falling and improved athletic performance.
