The Central Maryland Neurosurgical Associates now have the latest in computer technology and advanced image guided surgery system, to assist in brain and spinal surgery for removal of tumors, lesions, aneurysms and other abnormalities. This technology allows Mercy's surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgical techniques that provide the patient with less risk and a shorter recovery time.

The system known as the SMN (Surgical Microscope Navigator), was acquired from Carl Zeiss, Inc., the world's leading manufacturer of image guided technology and surgical microscopes.

The SMN guides the surgeon to the lesion in much the same way as a pilot using computer navigation to land a jet aircraft. It's a computer driven microscope that shows the exact location and size of the lesion on a monitor, providing greater precision during surgery.
