Sheri Rowen, M.D.

 

Sheri Rowen, M.D.

Ophthalmologic surgeon Sheri Rowen, M.D., Director of the Eye and Cosmetic Surgery Center at Mercy, brings extensive experience to the evaluation and treatment of eye and vision problems. She has established a world-wide reputation by being the first in the Baltimore region (and one of the first nationally) to remove cataracts without the use of injection anesthesia. Using micro incisions and foldable lens technology, she is able to achieve "instant vision" cataract surgery, without needles, stitches or patches. Dr. Rowen is also among the first physicians in Baltimore to offer the FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens, the Crystalens, to help cataract patients with pseudophakic presbyopia. Dr. Rowen was one of 10 investigators in a national study for the use of an implantable contact lens for correcting myopia and hyperopia.

Dr. Rowen has lectured internationally, teaching advanced techniques in cataract and laser surgery to physicians worldwide. She serves as an assistant clinical professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is a clinical instructor for Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Rowen earned her medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and has been in medical practice since 1988. She completed a one-year surgical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was a research fellow for two years at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins.

Wendy Bohner, M.D.

Wendy Bohner, M.D., Board Certified ophthalmologist, has extensive experience in cataract removal, premiere lenses (Crystalens, ReZoom and ReStor), diabetic screening, glaucoma screening and treatment, plaquinal therapy screening, and routine exams.

Dr. Bohner earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She completed her internship in Internal Medicine and her residency in Ophthalmology, both at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Her career includes honors from Harvard Medical School, Allegheny-Singer Research Institute and the Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. Dr. Bohner is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Ophthalmology

Rohit Ross Lakhanpal, M.D.

Rohit Ross Lakhanpal, M.D., graduated with honors from Franklin & Marshall College, and then received his medical degree from the University of Maryland. His Ophthalmology residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Johns Hopkins University was distinguished by his appointment as Chief Resident. 

Dr. Lakhanpal then undertook a two-year research and medical retina fellowship at the Doheny Retina Institute under the guidance of Mark S. Humayun, M.D., Ph.D. and Eugene de Juan, M.D. There, he wrote several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on the Intraocular Retinal Prosthesis (Artificial Vision). He also wrote several early landmark papers concerning 25-gauge vitrectomy which is now the standard of care in Vitreoretinal Surgery. Dr. Lakhanpal was honored with the prestigious Fletcher Jones Foundation Grant for his work and was one of the founders and the Principal Investigator of the Doheny Digital Reading Center’s Diabetic Screening Studies.

Following his tenure at Doheny, Dr. Lakhanpal completed a two-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine. He served as the Chief of the Retina Service for the Ben Taub General Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Hospital, and Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Lakhanpal was honored with the Outstanding Fellow Award among his peers. He has published over 75 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.

Dr. Lakhanpal is a co-founder and current Vice-President of the Vit-Buckle Society (VBS), a national vitreoretinal society focused on surgical innovation and technique while fostering an atmosphere of discussion and camaraderie.

In 2009, Dr. Lakhanpal was appointed Section Editor of Retina Today, a monthly peer-reviewed periodical highlighting innovations in medical and surgical vitreoretinal techniques. He was also appointed Section Editor of Eyetube.net, a global resource for ophthalmologists to view and discuss surgical challenges and techniques.

During his first year of eligibility, Dr. Lakhanpal was elected to the prestigious Retina Society. He is an active member of the Wilmer Residents Association, Doheny Alumni Association, Baylor Alumni Association, American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), Association of Research and Vision in Ophthalmology (ARVO), Vit-Buckle Society (current Vice-President), and Retina Society.  

Dr. Lakhanpal lectures nationally and internationally on numerous vitreoretinal topics ranging from innovative surgical techniques to preferred practice patterns for intravitreal injections. Dr. Lakhanpal has been the principal investigator an sub-investigator on numerous clinical trials.  His research involved the investigation of new treatments for retinal diseases including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.


Ophthalmology
Jennifer L. Stone, O.D.

Jennifer L. Stone, O.D., graduated Summa Cum Laude from Michigan State University, with a Bachelor's of Science in Human Biology. Dr. Stone completed her Doctor of Optometry training at Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia. She received numerous awards for her scholastic and clinical achievements, including the Varilux Scholarship, Alcon Clinical Excellence Award and the American Academy of Optometry Travel Grant Fellowship Award.

Dr. Stone completed her residency in Ocular disease by serving at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Hospital. During that time, she also trained with the faculty from the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, in the sub-specialties of Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea, LASIK surgery and specialty contact lenses.

Dr. Stone’s research pursuits have included isolating a genetic link for glaucoma, exploring novel medication delivery systems and educating patients and colleagues about all aspects of eye drop compliance and adherence. Dr. Stone has also traveled to Madurai, India to teach and assist in developing a new optometry curriculum for the Aravind Eye Hospitals, the largest self-sufficient eye care system in the world. Prior to joining the Mercy Department of Ophthalmology, Dr. Stone practiced in a glaucoma practice diagnosing and treating all forms of the disease.

Dr. Stone is a member of the Optometric Glaucoma Society and a candidate for Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry.
