Surgical Oncology:
Clinical Conditions & Program Offerings

Liver Tumors

The treatment of tumors on the liver can be very challenging due to its size, complex anatomy and proximity to many vital structures. It can be affected by various benign and malignant (primary) tumors. The liver is also frequently involved in the spread of tumors from other sites or organs (metastases). Good long term survival is expected if the metastases or primary tumors are surgically removed completely, however, resection remains a very complex procedure and requires a high level of clinical expertise.

Drs. Sardi and Gushchin are highly skilled in the surgical treatment of both primary and metastatic liver tumors. Dr. Sardi is one of the few surgeons in the region to have successfully performed laparoscopic resection of liver tumors. This approach results in a smaller incision, less blood loss and reduced hospital stay and recovery period.

It is often not possible to remove metastatic tumor from the liver surgically. In this case, the tumors can be shrunk with a combination of chemotherapy and targeted agents (neo-adjuvant chemotherapy). Together with our medical oncology colleagues we re-evaluate patients after neo-adjuvant therapy for liver resection. Portal vein embolization is another modern approach to further increase the success of extensive liver surgery. Drs. Sardi and Gushchin also offer radiofrequency ablation for unresectable liver tumors, which can be done laparoscopically.  Although, when possible, removal of the tumor offers the best long-term results.
