Radiation Oncology:
Clinical Conditions & Program Offerings
Radiation Oncology at Mercy treats a wide variety of
cancers including lymphoma (cancer of the lymphoid tissues, such as the
spleen), melanoma (skin cancer), breast cancer, gynecologic cancers, and
lung cancer. Different cancers respond differently to radiation therapy.
Radiation therapy can be used:
- Alone as a complete treatment for cancers such as some skin
cancers, cancer of the thyroid and some brain tumors;
- In conjunction with surgery, either before surgery to reduce
the size of a tumor or after surgery to make sure all the cancer
cells are destroyed;
- To treat local spread of the cancer (as in the treatment of
breast cancer); it can also be performed in conjunction with
chemotherapy;
- In the emergency treatment of a cancer pressing on the spinal
cord to reduce the size of the cancer and prevent damage to
the nerves; and
- As a palliative measure in advanced cases of cancer to treat
symptoms, such as the pain caused by spread of cancer to the
bones.
