Head & Neck Cancer
The Head & Neck Cancer Program at Mercy, led by
Ileana Showalter. M.D., offers specialized care for the diverse
cancers affecting the head and neck regions. Working with
the multidisciplinary experts in Mercy's Cancer Program, patients
have access to clinical expertise, state-of-the-art diagnostic tools
and a comprehensive treatment program.
Risk factors associated with head and neck cancers include tobacco smoking, alcohol use, industrial exposures (metals like nickel and chromium, wood dust, textiles), asbestos exposure, contact with specific viruses, vitamin A deficiency and iron deficiency.
An accurate and early diagnosis is critical. Signs and symptoms of head and neck cancer may be vague but can include nasal and sinus problems, and persistent hoarseness. In some cases a mass may be visible. Diagnostic technologies such as CT scans, MRI and ultrasonography may be used to better evaluate the extent of the disease.
Treatment can include a variety of therapies including radiation therapy, surgery, and possibly chemotherapy.
